Event : The Lost Art of the Recital

Date : 5 March 2010
Time : 7:30:00 PM

We are pleased to invite our members to this special event hosted by MAHMA. One of the five Collabortive Partners of La Senora in presenting concerts in a traditional 'chamber' setting. "The Lost Art of the Recital" event carries the tradition a step further by being followed by a discussion led by distinguished author, Annette Kaufman, -- who is known to add her witty and fascinating stories to discussions.
The Recitals take place on March 2nd at 7 p.m. (6:30 p.m. for refreshments) and again March 5th at 7:30 p.m. (7 p.m. for refreshments) at the Malibu estate of Maria Newman and Scott Hosfield, the Montgomery Arts House for Music and Architecture. The evening has been generously sponsored in part by the Hosfeld, Cohen and Kaufman families. Directions will be provided to those who make reservations with La Senora by e-mailing music@lasenora.org by noon March 1st for the 3/2 performance and by March 3rd for the 3/5 performance.
La Senora members have been warmly invited as their guests to experience great chamber music as it was heard in the era of Beethoven and Schumann:----- so close-up that you might feel you could "touch" it.
Venue: Montgomery Arts House for Music and Architecture
6307 Busch Drive
Malibu, CA. 90265
"The Lost Art of the Recital"
In the early and mid 20th Century, cello and piano teams traveled the globe performing recitals for a public that thirsted to hear and meet their favorite artists. Fans were able to recognize these superb musicians by the quality of their individual sounds and the uniqueness of their musical language. But this art has been lost. Only a few recital superstars remain in a world that now hungers instead for pop culture, immediate satisfaction and a noise level prohibiting discussion.
Montgomery House for the Arts, in Malibu is presenting two evenings in remembrance of a time lost, when music lovers would gather for friendship, refreshments, and to discuss their favorite music, and, just as heartily, declare their individual opinions. A time when discussion, as one of the few forms of entertainment, was wielded effortlessly.
These evenings will present a dynamic cellist: the award-winning Andrew Shulman, who joins esteemed pianist Wendy Prober for a recital of exquisite gems of the classical repertoire. As the years fall away, allowing simpler times to emerge, the two will become one in performances of masterworks by Beethoven and Robert Schumann, a world premiere by MAHMA's Composer-in-Residence, Maria Newman, and a brilliantly riveting work of Erwin Schulhoff, who sadly perished in a concentration camp in World War II.
You are already a part of La Senora's unique portal to Cultural History. (Don't forget to renew your membership for 2010. This can be done online at http://lasenora.org/donations.asp.)
We invite you to enjoy this rare opportunity to hear, discuss and focus upon a cello/piano team in MAHMA's incredibly inspiring architectural setting.

Event : LA Musical Salon Concert/Dinner
Date : 6 March 2010
Time : 6:00 PM

LA Musical Salon's next dinner-concert is coming up, this Saturday, March 6, 2010.

Event : Music Of The People, By The People, For The People
Date : 9 April 2010
Time : 7:30 PM
La Senora would like to share with you some information on Karen Benjamin's latest project, MUSIC OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE. Ms. Benjamin stated that, around the time the economy tanked, she found a book of art song arrangements of American folksongs and was struck by not only the beauty of the music but how poignant the lyrics were with
respect to the current situation in this country (and the world for that
matter). This is Ms. Benjamin's latest project, which brings her back to singing with "classical chops." Ms. Benjamin's husband, Alan Champan, has written some brilliant arrangements, in addition to various other composer's arrangements of these timeless folksongs, spirituals and Hutchinson family songs of the 19th century.

The concert is a sophisticated and fun art song program that features not only Ms. Benjamin, singing soprano, but also the wonderful tenor, Charles Lane (LA Master Choral and Opera), the incredible Yulia Kozlova (Santa Monica College faculty member) on piano, and of course, the ubiquitous Alan Chapman (KUSC) providing some insightful commentary.
This "happening" will be taking place at the Madison campus of Santa Monica
College, corner of Santa Monica and 11th, on
FRIDAY, APRIL 9th, at 7:30 p.m.
We will be in the 130 seat EDYE SECOND SPACE (attached to the
Broad Stage).
This is a FREE concert with no reserved seating, so come early
and grab a seat. Free parking, in the big parking lot.

Event : Art of Empire - Aztec Culture and Concert
Date : 10 April 2010
Time : 3:00 p.m. at La Senora
Organized to celebrate the bicentennial of Mexican independence, this exhibition reveals a defining moment of cultural encounter. In the sixteenth century, European exploration and colonization in the Americas coincided with the Renaissance rediscovery of classical antiquity, and parallels were routinely drawn between two great empiresthe Aztec and the Roman. Masterworks of Aztec sculpture, largely from the collections of the National Museum of Anthropology and the Museo del Templo Mayor in Mexico City, are the point of departure for a comparative approach to the monumental art of empire.

Our group will meet at La Senora at 3:00 pm and carpool to the Getty Villa. After the guided tour of the Exhibition we will go to dinner, then return to the Getty Villa at 7:30 for the concert.
Songs from the Fifth Age: Sones de Mxico in Concert: - 8 pm
As both a source of political pride and a muse for cultural expression, Aztec civilization has captivated and inspired for more than five centuries. Turning fresh eyes to this rich legacy, Grammy-nominated Sones de Mxico presents their signature mix of traditional instruments and original compositions as well as folk songs and dance. Complements the exhibition The Aztec Pantheon and the Art of Empire. Patron Membership Renewal. Tickets $30 includes exhibit and concert. Dinner is user pay. If you do not carpool, Getty Parking reservation is required at $15 charge by Getty Villa

There is a $6 donation request from UCLA.
Guest lecturer Tom Griffiths of UC Berkeley's Cognitive Science Department will present his findings on how our preconceptions influence our interpretations of what we learn. This inductive bias has played a major role in the interpretations of the settlement of Los Angeles and its movement from predominately Latino/Mexican to Anglo elite societies. Note that this lecture may be best suited to the serious student of cognitive transference in cultural settings. For more information on this topic here is a link to Professor Griffith's complete paper. The conclusions are contained in Paragraph 6. http://cocosci.berkeley.edu/tom/papers/ilreview.pdf

Time : 3:30 pm
June brings our annual New Ivy Chamber Ensemble to help us enjoy
the 200th birthday of both Schumann and Chopin .

The program includes the Schumann Piano Quartet, Chopin Cello Sonata, and the Brahms Clarinet Trio."
At age 9 Berenika soloed with the Sault Orchestra and by age 13 she was at Julliard; (after which she graduated magna cum laude from Harvard, went on to Oxford and then the Royal Academy of Music in London).
Her credits include being the Leonard Bernstein Fellow at Tanglewood and the New Horizon's Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival. When Phillip Glass received the Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Award in the Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC, Berenika was chosen to play "Philip Glass" for Phillip Glass.
Berenika's performances have been on NPR Bravo!, CBC, CityTV, YTV, MDR Germany, WCQS, BBC, WQXR NY & Classic FM London. Event : Vintage Tango: Sultry Summer Evening
Date : 17 July 2010
Time : 6:30:00 PM
One of the most lauded groups playing in Santa Monica Canyon from the 2008 Season was the Vintage Tango Ensemble.

The performance will begin at 7 p.m. but come at 6:30 Due to wonderful response from several meet-ups we have added a reception BEFORE the concert with wine & h'ors d'oeuvres in the botanical gardens. People have requested that this concert provide them a 'reason to dress up'. Not Black Tie! But fun, sophisticated dressing up. Yes, you can wear Tango shoes -- this started as a concert, not a dance party. However, the musicians knew that people would want to dance in the gardens during and after the concert. We even found a volunteer to give a Tango lesson, entirely optional! We'll add sweets and coffee service then too. You will have the opportunity to get better acquainted with each other and mingle after the concert with the musicians. Did I mention that these are all fun guys?
Please get tickets on our Events Registration page. Both Member and non member tickets are sold there.

The Ensemble's Leader and Violinist -ALAN BUSTEED - as Concert Master for the Orquesta de Baja California -(OBC ) toured NYC's Lincoln Center; his work as Lead Violinist for new works by prominent composers from Mexico City was a highlight of his association with the OBC. He also joined up with harpist Andea Puente to perform a program featuring the composer and Mexican popular music legend, Augustin Lara, at the Mexican Embassy in Los Angeles. Guitarist MARCELO CASERES, a native of Cordoba, Argentina, began playing guitar as a child; by age fifteen he was performing to professional acclaim. In the U.S. Marcelo continued the Argentine tradition of gifted students studying with master musicians--Marcelo had the privilege of studying with noted artists Ted Greene, Ron Eschette, Mike Miller, and Sid Jacobs. As a tango musician he has toured the world with Bandoneon specialist Coco Trivissono and with the Tango Dreams theater production. Marcelo's appearances as a guest artist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for their production of Tango Argentina, and in concert as a featured musician with the Santa Barbara Symphony for an evening of vintage tango have been among his high profile performances in Southern California. He also has extensive recording credits and has performed, collaborated on new repertoire, and toured nationally with noted musicians based in Los Angeles.

Pianist ARMANDO PATRONO was immersed in the study of classical orchestration and piano technique at a time when the education of many of the most gifted musicians in Argentina was private study with an established musician. From age 14 -28 he studied classical piano repertoire and devoured orchestral scores with Maestro Cayetano Marcoli in Buenos Aires. Armando's affinity for regional folkloric music of Latin America infuses his over 400 works with the infectious rhythms and melodies of indigenous people and is representive of the best popular Latin music of the late 20th Century. Armando became the Artistic Director and Music Producer of an Argentine major label, Odeon, with a long list of credits of "musica popular de Argentina" and he conducted his arrangements and original compositions with symphony orchestras in Chile, Venezuela, Peru, Uruguay and Mexico. He recorded frequently for RCA Victor. Close work with celebrated arranger Bebu Silvetti and his role as Music Director for Escala Musical in Buenos Aires brought him national attention. In the U.S. he produced the Romance of the Tango Soundtrack CD and led his "Armando Patrono y su Orquesta" recording for CBS. For a Miami hotel, his "Armando Patrono and the Golden Tango Orchestra" had a weekly seven year engagement.

Our Cellist DIEGO MIRALLES started his cello studies at age 4. With his Argentine parents the rhythms and intonations of Latin America were never distant, but while earning his BA in Music Performance at USC he focused on concert quality performance in not just Latin music but styles from classical to pop. Diego has performed, toured, or recorded with Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, Andrea Bocelli, Frank Sinatra Jr., Alexis Gershwin, Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow, Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, composer/arranger David Foster, and many others. He is the music director of the West Coast Chamber Orchestra in Santa Barbara as well as its principal cellist. Diego recently collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma and neuroscientist Antonio Damasio on a multimedia production in New York called "Self Comes to Mind," composed by Bruce Aldoph. He also co-founded the Los Angeles Contemporary Ensemble to encourage the creation and popularization of new compositions. Diego formed the highly praised Hermes Piano Trio in 2009 and toured Europe, appearing on many radio and TV stations. His performances always include compositions from his Latin American heritage. He has extensive classical credits and recently performed the Beethoven Triple Concerto with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and has performed with the New West Symphony, California Philharmonic, San Bernardino Symphony, Los Angeles Symphony, and Asia America Symphony. He has an extraordinarily broad range of talent. And he's not his only family member to be musically noteworthy. You will hear Diego play on a Montagnana model cello made by his brother, renowned luthier Mario Miralles.
Thomas Harte completed both his undergraduate and Master's degrees at Julliard as a student of legendary bassist, Homer Mensch. While at Juilliard, Tom was chosen to perform in many "guest artist" master classes, including those given by Chris Hanulik, Peter Lloyd and Edgar Meyer. As a member of the Juilliard Orchestra, he performed under conductors with international reputations, such as David Robertson, Leonard Slatkin, and Kurt Masur. Tom then joined the Juilliard Orchestra for a tour of Asia and they recorded "Concertos of My Childhood" with violinist Itzhak Perlman. Ever refining his art, Tom relocated to Houston where he studied with Paul Ellison then moved to California where, as a student of David Moore, he received his Artist's Diploma from USC. His extensive studies under master bassists have enriched Tom's natural ability to perform in a broad range of styles. A studio recording artist in high demand, Tom's also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Pacific Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, the New West and Long Beach Symphony Orchestras, the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.

Concerto in e minor. Julius Conus (1869-1942)
Our program begins with the music of a Russian composer of French extraction who was much better known for his own virtuoso violin performances than for his compositions; his extraordinary talent inspired Rachmaninoff to dedicate his Two Pieces for Violin and Piano Op 6 to Conus. The extensive working relationship between Conus and Rachmaninoff brought their families together and Conus' son later married Rachmaninoff's daughter. The piece to be presented by our two Colburn Academy performers was premiered in 1898 in Moscow, performed by Conus himself.

Suite for Violin and Piano II. "Mother and Child" - William Grant Still (1895-1978)
The history of Still and his Native American/Black/Hispanic/Anglo genetics, mirrors the profile of today's Los Angeles complexity; it also mirrors that of La Senora's 1839 Rancho Boca de Santa Monica heritage. William Grant Still is known as the Dean of Black Classical Composers. Of the same Los Angeles era as La Senora's Jose Mojica, Stills' contribution to that musical community was, and remains, noteworthy. In 1936 he was the first Black conductor of a major U.S. Symphony ---the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It is very important to understand that Still was not a great Black composer; he was a great composer, period. He simply lived in a time when his race was noted and was an obstacle to be overcome. Still proved himself eminently capable of overcoming such obstacles as his list of first achievements fills an entire page.

Scherzo no 1 in b minor Op 20 - Frederic Chopin(1810-1849)
This year the world is celebrating Chopin's 200th birthday. Virtually all of Chopin's works are for the piano (or its earlier counterpart the Harpsichord). While Chopin's music is noted for its nuance and expressive depth, it's also deceivingly technically demanding. At age 7 he composed his Polonaises in G Major and B Flat Minor and was being widely compared with Mozart and Beethoven at the same age. At age 16 Chopin undertook formal studies with Elsner whose notes say he observed rather than directed the developing talents of Chopin because he did not want to constrain Chopin with narrow, academic, outdated rules; Chopin was inventing musical forms and made major innovations to existing musical structures. An important point to consider in listening to today's selected piece is George Sand's remark that Chopin is more Polish than Poland itself; this work was written when Chopin, while in Paris, learned of Russia's crushing of the Polish Uprising of 1830. His dismay and the outcries of his tormented heart found expression in this very dark, dramatic and fiery Scherzo No 1 in B minor.

Carmen Fantasy -Op 25 - Pablo Sarasate (1844-1908)
We close the program with Spanish composer Pablo Sarasate's fantasy based on Bizet's opera, Carmen. Sarasate, another child prodigy who at age 8 was a sensation at the Court of Queen Isabella and who won the Paris Conservatory First Prize at age 17, often played this piece to demonstrate his own virtuoso skill in mastering its intricacies. It is considered to be one of his most challenging works for the violin due to the combination of its delicate techniques and "sanquineous passion" ; critics also note that this work demonstrates Sarasate's role in transmitting Spanish idioms to a greater Europe.
